About Cleanwater Central™

Take a tour of Cleanwater Central
In 1999, the National Association of Clean Water Agencies (NACWA) (formerly the Association of Metropolitan Sewerage Agencies -- AMSA) and the Water Environment Research Foundation (WERF) formed a partnership to fund and develop a centralized Internet database containing detailed technical and research information relevant to wastewater facilities. The intent was to build a fully searchable database providing public utility managers and researchers access to a range of valuable information on treatment processes, collection systems, and equipment used at agencies and facilities within the NACWA and WERF memberships. Queries on these data would help NACWA and WERF identify trends, forecast research needs for the future, and assist in targeted regulatory and legislative efforts. In addition, the database is also designed to ease the gathering of technical and research data via the use of online surveys. This database has become known as Cleanwater Central™.

Current Database Contents
Currently, the Cleanwater Central™ database contains data on over 480 wastewater agencies and 700 treatment facilities nationwide. The information includes data collected from NACWA surveys, WERF research studies, and utility and facility data provided public water and wastewater agencies. Several of these surveys were designed to provide only aggregate information. In these cases, data have been blinded (not linked to individual agencies) and are available in summary formats only. Current data includes:

  • NACWA and WERF Membership Information 2007
  • NACWA Public Relations Survey 2006
  • AMSA/WERF THC/CO CEMS Survey 2004
  • WERF Plant Upset and Detection Methods 2005
  • NACWA Financial Surveys 1996-2005
  • NACWA Index (Household User Charges) 1985-2006 (Blinded)
  • NACWA Peak Performance Awards 1998-2006 (Blinded)
  • AMSA Sewage Sludge Survey 1996 (Blinded)

Data Updates and Surveys
Each year, public agencies subscribing to Cleanwater Central™ are asked to update their baseline agency and facility level information online. In this manner, redundant collection of agency and facility description data is minimized, while ensuring that the database remains up-to-date. Cleanwater Central™ will also be used to centralize information gathered in future NACWA and WERF surveys, and includes an online survey collection/viewing tool.

Queries and Reports
Cleanwater Central™ includes a powerful data analysis and querying tool for those seeking specific agency or facility-level information, data from past utility surveys, or utility benchmarking data. Cleanwater Central subscribers can query on several different parameters and summarize data via charts and graphs, and statistical summaries. Downloads of data in Microsoft Excel format are also available. Following a few simple steps, a user can build his/her own queries and output various statistics or performance indicators based on the data contained in the database.

Access to Cleanwater Central™
Access to the Cleanwater Central™ database is restricted. Public affiliates, public members, and public subscribers of NACWA and WERF have been provided with free access to the database. Public agencies not affiliated with NACWA and WERF can also gain free access by adding their agency and facility information to the database. Private entities may pay for access, however, information will be available in a blinded format only.
